Lab Work

How Laboratory Testing Works at ALMS

Simple, Convenient Process

Getting lab work done at ALMS is easy:

Order: Your provider orders necessary tests during your appointment (or you can schedule a lab-only visit)

Collection: Our trained phlebotomist draws your blood or collects other specimens
Processing: Samples are processed in our on-site lab or sent to reference labs
Results: Most results available within 24-48 hours (many same-day)
Review: Your provider reviews results and contacts you with findings and next steps

For routine monitoring labs, you can often schedule a quick "blood draw only" appointment, get your labs done in 10-15 minutes and leave. Your provider will contact you when results are ready.

Fasting vs. Non-Fasting Tests

Some lab tests require fasting (no food or drink except water for 8-12 hours before testing):

Fasting Required:

  1. Lipid panels (cholesterol)

  2. Fasting glucose

  3. Some comprehensive metabolic panels

No Fasting Needed:

  1. Complete blood counts

  2. Thyroid tests

  3. Most other blood work

  4. Hemoglobin A1C

We'll always tell you if fasting is required when scheduling your lab appointment.

Preparing for Lab Work

To ensure accurate results:

  1. Follow fasting instructions if required

  2. Stay hydrated (drink water before blood draws)

  3. Take regular medications unless told otherwise

  4. Inform your provider of all medications and supplements

  5. Wear short sleeves or easily rolled-up sleeves

  6. Arrive on time for your appointment

If you're nervous about blood draws, let our phlebotomist know. We're experienced with anxious patients and will make the process as comfortable as possible.

Understanding Your Lab Results

Reference Ranges and What They Mean

Every lab test has a "reference range" or "normal range", the values seen in healthy people. Your results are compared to these ranges.

Important to know:

  • Reference ranges vary by age, sex, and sometimes race

  • "Normal" doesn't always mean optimal

  • Trends over time matter as much as single values

  • Some medications affect lab values

Context matters, your provider interprets results based on your complete health picture

Your provider will explain what your results mean for YOU, not just whether they fall within the normal range.

Accessing Your Results

We make it easy to access your lab results:

  • Patient Portal: View results online securely

  • Phone Call: Your provider calls to discuss abnormal results

  • Follow-up Appointment: In-person review for complex results

  • Secure Messaging: Ask questions about results through patient portal

You own your health information. You always have the right to copies of your lab results.
